Under weak dependence, a minimum distance estimate is obtained for a smooth function and its derivatives in a regression-type framework. The upper bound of the risk depends on the Kolmogorov entropy of the underlying space and the mixing coefficient. It is shown that the proposed estimates have the same rate of convergence, in the L 1-norm sense, as in the independent case

J.E. McPherson – A Career of Exemplary Service and Contributions to the Entomological Society of America

(excerpt) Scientific societies are a vital component of the infrastructure that fosters progress in science. They play a vital role in the exchange of information through the publication of scientific journals and by organizing scientific meetings and symposia at which results and ideas are shared and discussed, professional contacts are made, and networks established and maintained. Scientific societies provide a plethora of professional development opportunities for both young and established scientists. They are volunteer organizations comprised of and led by practicing scientists, teachers, and practitioners who provide the vision, leadership, governance, scientific and ethical standards, scientific programming, and educational training opportunities that lie at the core of their mission. Exceptional service to scientific societies is often a hallmark of outstanding scientists and educators. It is therefore no surprise that outstanding service to the Entomological Society of America (ESA) spanning over 30 years is a hallmark of J. E. (Jay) McPherson’s career (Fig. 1)

The generation of latent-ion-transport capacity

Of the various hypotheses designed to explain the movement of ions from the environment into the plant cell, the most attractive suggests that ions traverse cell membranes in combination with an endogenously produced carrier substance.(1,2) The hypothesis stems from the recognition that absorption kinetics are not first-order, but are, rather, best represented by a formulation analogous to that which describes the reversible combination of substrate and enzyme.(3) The carrier hypothesis is at least consistent with the known characteristics of the absorption process. Thus the remarkable specificity of the absorption process may be imputed to specificity on the part of the carriers; the requirement for respiratory energy may be related either to the production of carrier or to the degradation of ion-carrier complex; and the ability of ions to penetrate ion-impermeable cellular membranes may be ascribed to the formation of a permeating ion-carrier complex

Studies on the denaturation of antibody: II. The effect of protein concentration on the rate of denaturation of diphtheria antitoxin by urea

The specific rate of inactivation of antitoxin in urea solutions, as measured by the Römer neutralization test with toxin, has been shown to be independent of the concentration of protein under the conditions studied. The amount of precipitate obtained in the quantitative precipitation test with toxin, however, increases greatly with increasing protein concentration during denaturation. The time during which the protein concentration is important in this respect has been shown to be the interval in which the urea is being dialyzed from the solutions. The meaning of the results is discussed

q,k-generalized gamma and beta functions

We introduce the q,k-generalized Pochhammer symbol. We construct $\Gamma_{q,k}$ and $B_{q,k}$, the q,k-generalized gamma and beta fuctions, and show that they satisfy properties that generalize those satisfied by the classical gamma and beta functions. Electronic Collaboration Across Cultures in a Web-based Project for English Writing Instruction

The paper highlights the importance of experimentation and an innovative approach to English language writing instruction with the help of information communication technology (ICT or IT). First, it describes the local situation of English language teaching at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Then, it summarizes the development of IT proficiency and student-led collaborative learning groups at CUHK. Third, it reports on an International Web-based writing project involving six collaborating schools in different parts of the world including China, the United States, Indonesia, and Hong Kong in the year 1999-2000. In the report, the author-presenter will share with the audience a new ELT course development titled "English Online: Writing on the Web." He will explain the course objectives, the background of participating classes, the Web Course Tools (WebCT), the design of the project, the evaluation of course effectiveness and the outcome of the new curricular initiative. Finally, the paper presents a summary of a practical guide to electronic collaboration and some of the lessons the writer has learnt in five years\u27 experience of participant-observation in English teaching practice using the Web
